Spearheaded by Creative Directors Asia Clarke and Christian Saint Boakye Jr., this captivating showcase promises to delve deep into the heart of Afro-Caribbean hair sculpture in urban environments.

Asia Clarke (@wild_moon): As one of the Creative Directors, Asia brings her passion for storytelling and visual art to the forefront. Her unique perspective on hair as a canvas for expression drives the exhibition’s narrative.

Christian Saint Boakye Jr. (@iamkaptin): Christian’s artistic vision complements Asia’s, emphasizing the sculptural aspects of hair. Together, they create a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation.

Originating from Accra, Ghana, the “Hair Portraits” featured in this exhibition offer a mesmerizing glimpse into the profound connection between hair aesthetics, cultural symbolism, and the dynamic evolution of urban spaces. With meticulous research conducted by journalist Bryan Owusu Konadu, and a captivating soundscape design by AtownTSB, the exhibition celebrates the intricate beauty and multifaceted narratives woven into Afro-Caribbean hair sculpture across the diaspora.

The excitement kicks off with the gallery’s opening night on Friday, June 14, from 5 PM to 8 PM. Attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of imagery and stories that define this groundbreaking exhibition. But the excitement doesn’t stop there. On Saturday, June 22, visitors can engage in an enlightening “Artist in Conversation” session from 3 PM to 5 PM, offering deeper insights into the creative process and inspirations behind the exhibition.

For those eager to delve even further into the themes explored in “STRANDS & STRUCTURES,” mark your calendars for Thursday, July 4, where an exhilarating “Artist Panel Talk & After Party” awaits from 5 PM to 12 AM. This event promises stimulating discussions with the minds behind the exhibition, followed by a vibrant celebration of art and culture.

But the exploration doesn’t end with the exhibition’s opening night festivities. On Saturday, July 13, from 3 PM to 5 PM, enthusiasts can participate in a captivating “Hair Sculpture Seminar,” offering a deeper understanding of the techniques and cultural significance embedded within Afro-Caribbean hair sculpting practices.

Throughout the exhibition’s duration, from June 14 to July 28, the Unit270 Gallery will open its doors every Friday through Sunday, from 1 PM to 6 PM, inviting visitors to experience the profound beauty and cultural resonance of “STRANDS & STRUCTURES” firsthand.
