Interview With Afia Yeboah

The journey so far….Afia Yeboah

Introduce yourself to us.

Afia Yeboah is a multi-faceted young Ghanaian creative who seeks to break boundaries and impact people positively. I hope to transform the world around me with innovative creativity and practical solutions. I am a model and also a singer, actress, voice talent, creative director, fashion designer and practising media practitioner.

How did you get into modeling, and when did you start?

In 2018, I considered a career in modelling. I believed it entailed what I loved to do – photography, videography and promotion of products . A beginner photographer friend of mine shot some images of me and those images were in my very first post on instagram. I became more active on the social media platform and the following year, I received messages from individuals and agencies that wanted to work with me and that is when modelling officially started.

Do you have a beauty routine? If Yes, What is your breauty routine?

I do have a beauty routine. I exfoliate my skin especially my face at least once every week. I do this with a turmeric sugar scrub (that I make) after I have steamed my skin to soften it and open up pores. I usually use African black soap and scented organic beauty bars for my skin. I use organic butters and oils like shea butter and vitamin E oil in the day and olive oil at night for skin and hair. Water is my very good friend. I drink water regularly and I make sure to get a simple manicure and pedicure as well as a nail treatment at least once a week.

Describe your perfect day off when you are not modelling?

A perfect day off would be spending time with myself, enjoying the cool breeze, listening to music and dancing, watching news, going for a stroll, treating myself to some lovely meals and making plans for future projects.

Has your perception of the modelling industry changed over time? Kindly let us know the difference.

My perception of the modelling industry has indeed changed over time. Before I joined the industry, I only knew modelling to be about promotion of brands using the images of people . But after I became a part of the industry, I realized that modelling is not just that; it is art. Photos and videos can depict art in simple and elaborate ways. Campaigns can promote a cause that improves conditions in society and models can be artforms that aid in this. Models can be advocates for general interests and also ambassadors for brands.

Do you believe models in your country are given the attention they deserve?

I believe models in Ghana are getting deserved recognition locally and internationally. We could, however, use some more attention.

Is there anything you would change if you could go back in time?

Well, there have definitely been a number of things that I would rather they had not happened, so yes. I am not sure what one thing I could mention. Then again, everything builds you for the journey ahead.

At the moment, what are the three songs you’re listening to on repeat?

• Echo Holy by Red Rocks Worship,

• Ainsi bas la vida by Indila

• Car Wash by Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliot.

Describe yourself in three words.

Creative, Versatile and Supportive

What are your career highlights so far?

Meeting and working with new creatives from different parts of the world since I started my career has been delightful. I am privileged to have worked with some of Ghana’s most talented creatives. I worked with brands these past few months and was a part of some impactful projects put together by fellow African creatives. One notable project was the one put together by award winning hairstylist Chalotte Mensah and International photographer and visual journalist Malin Fezehai. A special thanks to Ghanaian makeup artist Judah Osei. I have starred in a couple of short films; one last year and two this year. The people on set are always pleasant to be with.

What role does social media play in your career?

Social media has served as an avenue for acquisition of knowledge about my craft. It has given me the platform to learn from, interact and connect with many people from many different people all over the world. Most of the work I have done in my career was possible because of social media.

What was the best modelling advice you have ever received?

Practice, Be Intentional and Be Consistent with your craft.

Do you have anything in your closet that you would never throw away?

Well, my plain tees, basic black trousers because they are staples and one shirt I designed myself. That’s the very first piece for my fashion brand. Also, my afrocentric brass jewelry and one gold and black pendant necklace I received from a jewelry brand; it gives medieval regality.

What do you do for self-care and self-confidence, and how do you promote body positivity?

I get treats for myself as often as I can. It can be a nice assorted meal, a jewelry set or outfit I have wanted for while or visiting a place with lovely scenery that gives me joy. I keep myself from spaces that do not bring me peace. I believe that I am unique, that I am a gift. Instead of making comparisons, I focus on myself and my journey and learn from others. Having the right mindset is a form of self-care and definitely builds confidence. I believe every body type is unique and I make people aware of this in different ways. It may be through a resharing a post that preaches body positivity, hyping people up and uplifting someone who might not be happy with their body.

How do you build good working relationships with other models?

I do my best to get along with fellow models. I engage in healthy conversations, show support in whatever way I can and I try to make models I am working with feel comfortable.

Which brands have you worked with?

Charlotte Mensah, Melyon, AbenaRose, SnatchedCouture Vintage 1847, Ghislaine Beauty, Goddess by Riah, Luumva Collections, Bema’s Makeover

Are you currently working on any projects?

Yes I am. Most of which are personal projects and I am beyond excited to show them to the world.

How has it been for you as an influencer? What are the benefits and drawbacks?

It has been enlightening and fun. There have been people who reached out for advice and assistance relating to my career and I am always glad to help out however I can. I have also connected with brand owners and been a part of the support base for small businesses. Well, there are perks like getting quality products from brands and being a part of the journey and family of growing brands which is always a joy. The lack of timely availability of certain relevant resources to create has been a drawback but not one that cannot be dealt with.

Do you have any advise for someone who wants to pursue a career similar to yours?

Have passion for the work you do and you will definitely enjoy the process. Have good people skills and effective communications skills. Do not be put down by rejection or inconveniences. Feel free to explore; you may not get everything right in the beginning and that is alright. It may take time for you to discover your niche then again you can be versatile. Be assertive, be on time, be consistent and persistent, stay true to yourself and you will soar.
