Inside OPULEN: Dabota’s New Makeup Book

Opening something that feels ceremonial comes with a particular kind of confidence; a first edition, a locked diary, a box that asks to be unwrapped slowly. Dabota Cosmetics has bet its next chapter on exactly that instinct with “OPULEN”, a “makeup book” concept that trades the disposable palette-of-the-month for something closer to an heirloom.

Not a Palette, A Volume.

Where most beauty houses ship a compact and call it a collection, Dabota has built an entire nine-chapter “ritual” and bound it like literature. The brand’s own language leans into this: “Nine chapters. One ritual.” Flip through OPULEN and you move from I. Primers (three formulas) into II. Correctors; a trio in gold, red, and peach built to cancel out everything from dullness to hyperpigmentation; before landing on the base: nine concealer shades with SPF 35, paired with nine talc-free powder shades.

That number nine is not incidental. It runs through V. Blush (six shades), VI. Bronze & Glow (contour and highlight in tandem), VII. Eyeshadow (an ambitious twelve shades across three finishes), VIII. Lips (six shades plus matching pencils), and closes with IX. Brows & Tools, brow gels bundled with five professional-grade brushes, so the book arrives self-sufficient, needing nothing from your existing kit.

The shade architecture is where OPULEN makes its clearest statement. Nine concealer and powder shades span “Blanc, Beige 05, Beige 10, Beige 15, Tan 20, Tan 30, Mel 35, Mel 40, and Mel 45”; a gradient explicitly engineered, in the brand’s words, to run “from Blanc to Melanin 45” and complement the full range of skin tones rather than treating deeper shades as an afterthought at the end of a rack.

That same care shows up in the collection’s naming; “Egyptian Pyramids”, “Melanin Goddess”, “Champagne Dusk”, “Bloody Queen”, “Sun-kissed Gold”, “Coffee Ma’am”; shade and finish names that read like a mood board for richness rather than a swatch chart. It’s a deliberate rebuttal to the industry’s long habit of afterthought inclusivity, folded into a campaign built around the line “Every Queen. Every Shade.”

The Founder’s Note

Dabota Lawson

Every good beauty launch has its manifesto, and OPULEN’s comes signed. Founder Dabota Lawson frames the collection not as product but as intention: “Each shade, brush, and texture was carefully curated to empower your beauty journey. Here’s to confidence, creativity, and always showing up as your most opulent self.” It’s the kind of line that could read as boilerplate coming from a bigger, more anonymous house, here, tied to a named founder and a debut collection, it reads more like a thesis statement.

Visually, OPULEN commits fully to the “book” bit: a cream, silk-draped campaign image, a hardcover-style case stamped in gold with a small crown motif, the words “MAKEUP BOOK” set beneath the logo like a subtitle. It is packaging designed to be photographed on a vanity, not tossed in a drawer; a coffee-table object that happens to also correct, conceal, and contour.

The rollout mechanics are refreshingly uncomplicated: pre-order now, pay securely by card or transfer at checkout, receive instant confirmation, with shipping beginning August 15th. No waitlist theater, no drip-fed reveals; just a straightforward three-step path from browser to doorstep.

What OPULEN is really selling is a reframe. Most face-and-color collections ask you to build a routine from fragments purchased separately, across brands, over months. Dabota is proposing the opposite: one object, nine acts, a complete story from primer to brow gel, unified by a shade range that visibly did its homework on deeper skin tones from the outset. Whether the formulas justify the format is something only swatching will settle; but as a piece of positioning, “the makeup book” is a genuinely distinctive idea in a category that mostly ships the same clamshell compact with a new finish. Dabota Cosmetics isn’t just releasing a new SKU. It’s trying to release a genre.
