Djimon Hounsou Opens Up in Okay Africa Interview

In a candid interview with OkayAfrica, veteran actor and former model Djimon Hounsou openly discussed his life, career, and aspirations. Arriving alone at a Brooklyn studio for the magazine’s cover shoot, the 60-year-old Hounsou exhibited a humble demeanor, setting the stage for an intimate conversation. Despite his reputation for privacy in the celebrity-filled landscape, Hounsou’s presence commands attention, allowing the interview to provide a glimpse into the man behind his stoic on-screen roles.

Hounsou’s magnetism was evident throughout the interaction. Even in front of the camera, the experienced actor effortlessly embraced the role of muse, recalling his early days as a model when he caught the eye of the late Thierry Mugler. Hounsou’s graceful movements and signature smile reflected his natural affinity for modeling, which ultimately served as the launchpad for his eventual foray into Hollywood. While Hounsou is perhaps best known for his deeply emotional and impactful performances in films like Amistad and Blood Diamond, this interview offered a unique perspective on the man behind the acclaimed actor.

Djimon Hounsou’s reputation as a respectable figure in the industry is due to the integrity he demonstrates in his roles. However, some studios have considered him “too noble” for certain parts, which is a backhanded compliment that reflects the gravitas he brings. Despite his immense talent, Hounsou has consistently been relegated to supporting roles, leaving many fans puzzled about why he hasn’t received the lead roles he deserves. This lack of recognition has been a source of frustration for Hounsou, who feels “cheated” by Hollywood, as he previously expressed. While grateful for his career, Hounsou doesn’t shy away from feeling underappreciated and undervalued. Nevertheless, he remains grounded in his pride, having navigated the challenges of the entertainment industry, which he experienced firsthand as a homeless teenager in Paris after leaving his native Benin. These hardships have undoubtedly shaped the quiet strength and dignity he brings to his work.

Humbly focused on making a difference, he doesn’t dwell on his lack of Hollywood opportunities but instead concentrates on what he can do to contribute.

Djimon Hounsou has made significant contributions beyond his acting career through his philanthropic work. In 2019, he founded the Djimon Hounsou Foundation (DHF) to combat modern slavery and human trafficking, while helping African descendants reconnect with their cultural heritage. The foundation’s mission is deeply personal for Hounsou, stemming from his own search for identity and history. He laments the loss of knowledge caused by the transatlantic slave trade and emphasizes the importance of understanding one’s heritage to move forward in life.

Through the DHF’s initiatives, including the Africa Reconnect series and events like Run Richmond 16.19, Hounsou aims to bridge the gap between the past and present, facilitating healing and reclamation of African identity. His commitment to this cause is unwavering, as he uses his platform to raise awareness about these crucial issues. Hounsou’s work, both on and off the screen, is infused with a sense of purpose, whether he’s advocating for African communities or portraying characters with depth and dignity.

Looking ahead, Hounsou’s passion for storytelling continues through his production company, Fanaticus, which focuses on bringing African narratives to the global stage.

Despite his impressive accomplishments, Hounsou has not yet won an Academy Award, though he has been nominated twice. Hounsou’s legacy, however, is not defined by the awards he has won, but by the lasting impact of his work, which reflects his resilience and self-respect. As he reflects on his journey, Hounsou encourages others to “continue dreaming big,” as his own story demonstrates that he has defied the odds and carved out a unique place for himself in Hollywood on his own terms, and there is still more to come.
