Gallery 1957 was launched by Marwan Zakhem on March 6, 2016, Ghana Independence Day. It bears the year Ghana won its freedom from British colonial rule. Since then, Gallery 1957 has grown to occupy three different gallery spaces in Accra. Its program is focused on promoting international exchanges between contemporary West African art practices and the rest of the world. A new venue for showcasing Gallery 1957 artists from around Africa and the diaspora, Gallery 1957’s London location was opened in October 2020.

Gallery 1957 bridges the gap between local and international audiences. Beyond its roster of various artists and exhibitions, international gallery alliances and the launch of the artist residency program have welcomed many foreign artists and arts professionals to Ghana and encouraged them to get more involved with the vibrant contemporary art scene in the nation.

Through a public programme that consists of fairs, seminars, off-site projects, site-specific installation commissions, as well as the publication of books and catalogues, Gallery 1957’s activity extends beyond the gallery walls and consistently supports cultural activities in Ghana and beyond.
