SA: Can you share a bit about yourself, your background, and how you first got started in the world of modeling?
Alright!
First of all, I thank God for this opportunity, and I also want to thank you for providing me with this space to share my journey. I truly appreciate it.
I am King David (Nana Kofi) Adu-Gyamfi, a final-year student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, pursuing a BSc in Statistics. I graduated from St. Augustine’s College with a Business Certificate in 2020. I attend Christ World Incorporated, popularly known as Love Economy Church. Our Head Pastor is Bishop Isaac Oti-Boateng, and my branch Pastor is Rev. Obed Kobby Essiam. I come from a family of seven (7), which includes five (5) siblings, my parents, and myself. All of these people are wonderful and lovely, and I appreciate them.
As for how I first got started in the world of modeling, officially, it’s been a year now, but unofficially, it’s been 3 years. It all began during my time in Senior High School when I decided to pursue a career in Fashion Modeling after graduation. However, I didn’t initially know how to make things work as well as I do now. I was primarily known for my dancing skills throughout my years in Senior High School.
Fast forward to August 2022, a lady messaged me on Instagram, stating that I would be a good fit for their modeling agency. That’s when everything started to fall into place. Prior to that, I had sent direct messages to a couple of modeling agencies, but only one replied, and their response was that I didn’t meet their height requirements. They were looking for individuals with a height of at least 185cm, while I was 175cm at the time. I decided not to bother reaching out to other agencies and opted to become a Freelance Model instead, steering clear of agencies. It was later that day when Regina Afiba Dadzie, the model scout from my current agency, Africamts, messaged me. I was pleasantly surprised, and the rest is history.

SA: What inspired you to pursue a career in modeling, and who were your role models in the industry?
My inspiration actually comes from God. My family is deeply involved in fashion, especially my father, who completes the picture. I also make an effort to look good almost every time, so I couldn’t let that go to waste. Whenever I dress up, I catch myself admiring myself in the outfit. I take a lot of pictures and end up watching them multiple times. Sometimes, I post them on my status. I realized that people love my style; I received compliments and reposts from them.
When it comes to role models in the industry, I didn’t actually know any top models when I started. My goal was simply to create content for people to enjoy. However, I was following this guy on Instagram, SHATTA BEE (@ghshattabee1). I liked his fashion sense and his Instagram posts. As I delved further into modeling, I discovered MICHAEL ANGELO TAYLOR (@michaelangelo1_2) through DAPPER JAYDEN (@1dapperjayden), and I liked their style.
I think I will discover who my role model is soon, but as it stands now, I don’t have one. I admire people’s style and anyone who is making it in the industry.
SA: Can you elaborate on your initial experience with dance and the dance artists who influenced you? How did it shape your creative journey?
Well, when dance got its name back in Ghana, I was already passionate about it, but I wasn’t taking it seriously. I lost to a guy in a dance competition way back in Primary School; that was what broke my heart and made me not take dance seriously. I feel like laughing right now, but I can’t express that feeling with an emoji here. Hahahaha (laughs).
I decided to follow Incredible Zigi. After some time, I found Afrobeast and Dancegod Lloyd. DWP Academy caught my attention. I planned on going for dance classes, but it never happened. I wanted to try Zigi’s dance class too, but it also didn’t happen. I had friends in High School who were members of DWP Academy. That was how I started getting in touch with dancers in Ghana and even outside. I finally had the chance to join the Kumasi DWP Academy team when I got admission to KNUST. Because I wasn’t getting the chance to meet the dance artists in person before University, I brought an initiative to promote dance artists in a certain sense. I created a Telegram and a YouTube channel to promote them. I had plans to even get a television channel for dancers; host interviews, go to their shows, and do other stuff related to them, just to support their dreams because it looked like I was almost backing out, and I didn’t want to cut conversations with them.
I had a number of interviews on my Telegram Channel with many of the dance artists and even musicians. A list of them includes Calvin Perbi, Jumaar, Dance Yaro, Kofi Low, Dance Code, T. Bad, Malcolm Nuna, Frizzygyal, Real Cesh, Stylish Ekikimi, Eddie Love, Dance Goat (Dappy Daps), and many others.
I used my YouTube channel to gain subscribers for some of them, practically after every interview I had. Also, I was posting their videos because my YouTube Channel served as a Dance TV.
SA: Could you describe some of the challenges you’ve faced as a model, and how you’ve overcome them?
Creating content was one of the challenges I faced. I had ideas, but the resources, and sometimes the team to work with, were not available. Staying active on social media and receiving less engagement on my posts are other challenges I can mention as well. I have found my way out now, though. I needed to take a break, analyze things, and come back stronger. The Holy Spirit helped me overcome it. I thank God!
SA: From your recent post on Instagram, you mentioned a realization that led you to change your direction. Could you share more about what prompted this change and the specific turning point in your journey?
Romans 12:1-3 helps me understand that I should not conform to the systems of this world and should also not think of myself, but rather be pleasing to God for His mercies shown to me.
When I used to go for DWP Kuamsi dance class, I also used to have dance rehearsals afterward in Church. I couldn’t combine both. First of all, it was God who gave me that gift. Every talent comes from God, so why don’t I use it to glorify Him alone? I needed to set myself apart for the gospel dance ministry only.
The turning point finally happened in late 2020 (the 4th year of my six-year journey). I had a couple of conversations with God as to whether what I was doing was right because deep down, I was not really enjoying it after some time. I got some answers to some of my questions from the kind of messages my pastors preach in church, and that was it.
[1] Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. [2] Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. [3] For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
Romans 12:1-3 NIV

SA: What are the key factors you consider when deciding whether to accept a brand collaboration? Are there certain values or criteria that are particularly important to you?
The time and season for the collaboration should not conflict with my church activities. Unless otherwise, I should get permission from my pastors. Perhaps, if the collaboration is good for me and the agency at the said time, my management will sign me up for it.The collaboration shouldn’t be one that will lead to me showing some parts of my body, like being bare-chested, or that will expose my private parts.
SA: What has been the most memorable moment or experience in your modeling career so far?
Just in the year I decided to focus on modeling, God gave me exposure by nominating me for the Fashion Model Of The Year at the Innovative Personalities Awards. I had a loving and supportive team that helped me win.
I can also talk about the interview opportunity that Style Afrique has offered me. Being able to stay in the industry for a year is a memorable experience I can talk about as well. The ups and downs were overwhelming. Also, my Instagram followers surged from 300 to over 1,000 in less than a year. Lastly, I had my first experience walking in a show.
SA: Can you tell us about some of your favorite fashion designers or brands that you’ve had the privilege to work with?
I don’t have any favorite designers yet. I’ve had the opportunity to work with M and S Prints, Sentiments, and Ishmael, a student designer. He hasn’t showcased any of his works yet, but I have had the opportunity to wear some of his outfits at a fashion show in Kumasi.
SA: Can you share any upcoming projects or goals you have in your modeling career?
No upcoming projects yet, but I’m planning to work on one with a friend. My goal is to preach the Gospel through fashion. I know it sounds quite outrageous, but it will work. Just wait patiently for it.
SA: Transitioning to modeling was a dream for you. What were the major challenges you faced during your decision-making process and the initial phases of your modeling career?
I didn’t face any challenges in making the decision because I took a break to plan, strategize, and prepare to come back stronger. Content creation, regarding the aspect of modeling I was going to focus on, was a problem at one point. I had ideas, but the resources to create them were not available until my agency enrolled me in Dag Modeling School.

SA: How do you balance your career as a model with other aspects of your life, such as family and personal interests?
Colossians 2:3 helps me understand that all knowledge and wisdom are hidden in Christ. As long as I am in Christ, I will know when and how to go about everything because the Spirit of God is at work in me. He knows my present, my past, and even my future.
[2] My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, [3] in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Colossians 2:2-3 NIV
SA: Are there any specific cultural or artistic influences that have shaped your unique style as a model?
My unique style as a model has been influenced by a diverse range of cultural and artistic sources. I draw inspiration from the works of renowned photographers and fashion designers, as well as various global cultures. For instance, I’ve been inspired by the elegance and grace of classy, vintage fashion and the vibrant colors and patterns of African textiles. These influences have all contributed to shaping my distinctive style as a model, allowing me to bring a fresh and dynamic perspective to the world of fashion and photography. Additionally, my mom once told me that I really look good in African prints. I guess I should focus more on them because I feel confident in them too.
SA: Connecting with your manager and model instructor seems like a pivotal moment. How did these connections impact your career and personal growth?
Connecting with my manager and model instructor was indeed a pivotal moment in my career as a fashion model. They played crucial roles in shaping my career and personal growth. My manager provided guidance and opportunities, helping me navigate the complex world of fashion. Their industry insights and network connections opened doors to high-profile gigs and collaborations.
On the other hand, my model instructor refined my skills, from perfecting my walk to teaching me the art of posing and expressing through my body and face. Their expertise transformed me into a more versatile and polished model.
Both connections were instrumental in my personal growth too. They instilled confidence and discipline in me, fostering self-esteem and resilience. The fashion industry can be demanding, but their support and mentorship helped me overcome challenges and stay true to my identity as a model. These connections, as pivotal as they were, continue to be the cornerstones of my thriving career and personal development in the world of fashion.

SA: How do you handle criticism or negative feedback, and what strategies do you use to stay confident and resilient?
My help comes from God. In Christ, I’m able to love the way I’m supposed to, regardless of criticism. 1 Corinthians 13:4–8a explains love. With this, I’m able to handle negative feedback. What people say can’t unmake me.
[4] Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. [5] It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. [6] Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. [7] It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. [8] Love never fails.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8a NIV

SA: In your opinion, what are some misconceptions people have about the modeling profession, and how would you address them?
The most common one I hear is that most of the female models are involved in sex work. It’s not true, and I can’t say much about it either. Also, models are often seen as distant and unapproachable. However, many models are down-to-earth and approachable. Building relationships with clients, photographers, and fans is a vital part of the job. I would encourage human connections.

Mentorship plays a significant role in the modeling industry, providing guidance, support, and valuable insights to aspiring models.
SA: In your Instagram post, you mentioned seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit. Can you elaborate on how your faith played a role in your journey and decision-making?
The Holy Spirit is the best gift Jesus Christ left us (John 14:18). He knows our past, present, and even the future. So why don’t I contact Him if I want to make a decision in life, since He knows everything about me?
SA: What has been the most unexpected or surprising aspect of your journey as a model?
Winning an award as the Fashion Model of the year was quite unexpected. I thought it was that far from me.

- Prioritize self-care by eating a healthy diet.
- Time management.
- Body positivity
- Stay informed; update yourself on what is current and trendy.
SA: Can you describe your personal fashion philosophy or signature style, and how it has evolved over the years?
Classy and Vintage are some styles I’ve discovered. I’m still learning and discovering more of what interests me. I don’t intend to follow trends but rather do what speaks to me, my roots, and where I see myself in some years to come. It’s also about how I can serve my audience for them to enjoy my content and stick with me.

SA: How do you handle moments of self-doubt or insecurity, and what strategies do you use to boost your confidence?
Everything I do starts with communication with the Holy Spirit, so He can see me through all my endeavors.
