Tyla’s breakout hit, “Water,” has achieved over 500 million streams globally, leading to a Grammy award, a viral TikTok dance trend, and remixes featuring artists like Travis Scott and Marshmello. Despite its massive success, Tyla remains grounded. “It came as a surprise to all of us, myself and my whole team. It was really a cool moment,” she reflected. She believes the song’s success lies in its innovative blend of traditional Bacardi dance style with modern music, which was new even to South African audiences.

Her self-titled debut album, “TYLA”, released on March 22nd, is a 14-track showcase of her unique sound, blending pop, R&B, afrobeats, and amapiano—a South African house music subgenre. The album is both experimental and true to her roots. “When I was younger, I always wanted to see a South African girl doing the things that I wanted to do,” she told VMagazine. “So I really would like to give that [example] to not only South African girls, but all African girls, and all girls everywhere.”

Tyla began writing music at just 12 years old. Growing up in South Africa, she performed in talent shows, for her family, and acted in school plays. These experiences shaped her into the performer she is today. “All those years of writing, making music by myself, performing in talent shows or for family, acting in plays—I feel like all of those moments developed me in a way and help me now as a performer and as an artist,” she said.

Multifaceted Artist

Tyla is not just a singer; she’s a songwriter, dancer, and actress. She incorporates these skills into her performances, making her shows a blend of music and theatrical elements. “I loved playing a character on stage and entertaining people,” she said, attributing her dynamic stage presence to her background in acting.

Evolving Style

Over the years, Tyla’s music and personal style have evolved significantly. From limited resources in her youth to now having access to fashion and music that reflect her tastes, she enjoys exploring and expressing her style. “Now, I’m able to play around more and get the pieces and wear the things that I’ve always wanted to wear,” she shared. Her musical direction aims to take African sounds to the world, blending pop, R&B, afrobeats, and amapiano to create a global appeal.

Future Aspirations

Tyla’s collaboration with rapper Gunna and Jamaican dancehall DJ and rapper Skillibeng on the track “Jump” highlights her growing confidence and global reach. The lyrics, “They never had a pretty girl from Joburg / See me now, and that’s what they prefer,” reflect her journey from Johannesburg to international stardom. Tyla is determined to continue breaking barriers and inspiring others. “I really would like to give that [example] to not only South African girls, but all African girls, and all girls everywhere—just to show that no matter where you’re from, it is possible,” she said.

Tyla’s VMagazine interview offers a deep dive into the mind of an artist on the rise. With her innovative sound, dedication to her roots, and ambition to bring South African culture to the global stage, Tyla is more than just a one-hit wonder. She’s a trailblazer, proving that music can transcend borders and unite cultures. Her journey is an inspiration to young girls everywhere, showing that with passion and perseverance, dreams can become reality.
